8 Common Twitter Mistakes

By: Sagefrog

Twitter is a great platform to openly communicate with your customers, contacts, and even your competitors, but having only 140 characters to express your thoughts can often lead to embarrassing missteps.  To avoid getting involved in a PR nightmare, be sure to not engage in the following practices:

  • Buy Now!— blatantly pushing products and services is a quick way to deplete your following. Nobody likes to be spammed so try describing new products or asking opinions instead.
  • Begging for Followers— the more followers you have, the larger audience you’re reaching (and potentially selling to), but begging is not the way to go about it. Instead try post engaging content, including relevant hashtags, and running promotions.
  • Long Tweets— studies show tweets that are under 100 characters get the most engagement. Make your tweets short and sweet!
  • Ignoring Your Mentions— Respond to everyone who mentions you, especially customers.  This will help you gain feedback as well as let customers know you value them.
  • Tweet for Tweet— Don’t tweet the same thing all day. Mix it up and make your tweets interesting.
  • Random Retweeting— Retweeting is a great way to build online relationships, but don’t go overboard; make sure they’re in line with your brand, messaging, and regular tweeting practices.
  • #So #Many #Hashtags— Narrow your tweets down to a few topics, and keep your hashtags to a minimum.  Hashtag bombing can lead to a hard-to-read tweets that get skimmed over.
  • Speed Tweeting— Tweet 4-6 times per day, over the span of the business day. If you clog up followers’ feeds, they’ll tire of it and unfollow you.
  • Auto Tweeting— It’s fine to pre-schedule tweets, but be sure to monitor them in case something changes (an event gets cancelled, your product gets recalled, etc…)
