Today our post is a recap of Rand Fishkin’s, CEO of Moz, White Board Friday post, “8 Ways to Use Email Alerts to Boost SEO.” The video is posted below, but here are the highlights:
Email alerts are a fantastic way to boost SEO through content identification, competitive intelligence, keyword research and link building.
The key tools to use for email alerts include:
- Google Alerts
- Fresh Web Explorer
- Talk Walker
- Mention.net
- Tracker
Key:
- The minus sign, – , removes content
- Link: links to a specific URL
- RD: Links to the root domain
- SD: links to the subdomain
- “ “ matches something exactly
- TLD: includes links from only this extension. For example “.fr” will show only French domains
- Site: shows only results from this root or subdomain
8 ways email alerts can help boost SEO:
- Links to your competitors, but not to you. This means that you can narrow your search so you will only see sites that are linking to your competitors sites. Simply type in:
- RD:competitor1.com
- RD:competitor2.com
- -RD:yourwebsite.com
- Brand mentions that don’t link to your website. Someone is talking about your brand, but does not post a link to your website.
- “Brand Name”
- -RD:yourwebsite.com
- Mentions your keywords, but does not link to your website.
- “Keyword 1” “Keyword 2”
- -RD:yourwebsite.com
- Shows content produced by a competitor or news site on a topic that is relevant to your business. The great thing about this is that you don’t have to subscribe to an entire blog, only the posts that are directly related to your industry / you are interested in.
- “Keyword”
- Site:competitor/newssite.com
- Shows links coming from a specific geographic region. This could be useful to find people linking to a competitor in a specific location.
- RD:competitor.com
- TLD:co.uk
- Links to your site. This will allow you to visually see new links and where they are coming from. This also gives you the opportunity to thank those that link to you through social media, etc.
- RD:yourwebsite.com
- Find blogs that are writing about topics relevant to your business/industry.
- Blog”Keyword”
- (Optional) Site:wordpress.com/blogspot.com
- Links to resources/data that you can compete with or offer a better version of. This is what will find you really great link targets and opportunities.
- Link:en.wikipedia.org/keyword
