Everything You Need to Know About the New Twitter Layout

By: Sagefrog

Twitter is getting a makeover and for those with existing profiles, you can expect a changeover to occur sometime in the upcoming weeks. While the circulating rumor has been that Twitter is becoming just like Facebook, it would appear that Twitter is taking the best features of Facebook, Google+ and Pinterest and making them their own. Here is what you can expect:

Profile Header or Hero Image – Your profile will now feature a large hero image across the top that will be 1500 pixels across. Our suggestion would be to format your images/logo now so you aren’t scrambling the day your profile makes the change.

Profile Picture– This will now be much larger and similar to Facebook and will slightly overlap the hero image on the left hand side of your profile. The dimensions will be 400×400 pixels.

Background image behind individual Tweets – When a user clicks to view the details of one specific Tweet, you have the opportunity to add a background image to this page. This is similar to the current format on Twitter, but it appears as though this background image will no longer be visible on your main profile.

All tabs will be centrally located below the hero image – This includes: Tweets, Photos/Videos, Following, Followers, Favorites and more.

Following/Followers – When you click on this tab, profiles will be displayed in a Pinterest-y fashion. You will be able to see a users’ hero images and profile, as well as their profile description.

Custom Tweet Appearances

  • Best Tweets – Your Tweets that receive the most engagement (RT, replies, favorited), will show up larger, ensuring that your best foot is always forward.
  • Pinned Tweets – You can now pin Tweets to the top of your profile allowing you to cherry pick the Tweets that you want seen first.
  • Filtered Tweets – When looking at another users profile, you can filter Tweets based on what you want to or don’t want to see.

Things are getting visual. The new layout is really playing up the shift towards visual content as a means to effectively captivate an audience. Photos/Videos is going to be the second tab in your profile – encouraging users to focus on visual Tweets, so make sure that you build up an arsenal of visual content to share along with your posts.

Only a select number of profiles have been changed, but here are two examples of what to expect:

Musician John Legend @JohnLegend
