20 Ways to Increase Your Following on Twitter

By: Sagefrog

Sagefrog is slowly but surely climbing its way up the Twitter ladder. Here are some tips and tricks we have learned along to way help you increase your following and gain more traction on Twitter.

  1. Optimize your Twitter Bio – strategically use keywords to aid in search.
  2. Make the right connections – You want to connect with “connectors” and “amplifiers.” Connectors will help connect you with other users in their existing networks who might be interested in what you tweet about. Amplifiers are Twitter users that will share your content. Make sure you thank them for sharing your tweets!
  3. Cross promote – Put your Twitter handle on other social sites such as Facebook, Google+, Tumblr, and Pinterest. Place a “Tweet this” button on your blog and make sure you have a “follow” button on your website. Any place you can add it, do it!
  4. Use Twitter directories – This is a place where people go and search for interesting people and businesses. Just another way for people to find you on Twitter and the listings are free! Try sites such as Twello, Wefollow , or TweetFind.
  5. Follow similar users – “Who to Follow” lists are based on your activity and are a great source to find quality followers. Also, look at the followers of your competitors, or those with similar job titles/functions, companies, etc. and follow them.
  6. Follow industry leaders – and be sure to interact with them. RT their content, @mention them if you feel a post is highly related to what they do or what they are interested in.
  7. Use keywords and hashtags that are industry related – you can search for relevant business words to include in your posts to increase your visibility on Twitter. Bonus – monitor trending hashtags that relate to your business and engage in that tweet chat by using the tag. Double bonus – retweet other people using the trending tag.
  8. Exercise the 80/20 rule – You want to be informative, not overly promotional. 80% of your content should include relevant and helpful information, industry news, tips, etc. and 20% of your content should be about yourself. You want to engage your customers, not just promote your products or services.
  9. Quotes – did you know that quotes are some of the most retweeted content on Twitter? Use inspirational quotes to connect with your followers.
  10. Tweet your blog posts – Twitter is the perfect platform to write a click worthy teaser and then drive people back to your blog.
  11. Use images and videos – 36% of links shared on Twitter are images so use them! Also, as Twitter becomes more video friendly, embed videos to further connect with your audience.
  12. Get smart with your headlines – being able to write solid and impactful headlines can go a long way on Twitter. Make sure your Tweets are so good that your followers can’t help but retweet them!
  13. Retweet your followers – You want to engage with your followers, not just throw information at them.
  14. Be concise – You already have limited character space, but make sure that your Tweets are under 140 characters so they are easy to RT.
  15. Ask questions – This further opens up a dialogue between you and your followers. Use these questions to engage and get responses and retweets.
  16. Be courteous – if someone has retweeted you, thank them. If you have a great customer or follower, @mention them and something awesome they have done. You can also mention them in a #ff (follow Friday). They might just return the favor.
  17. Don’t be afraid to use promoted tweets – use the ads on Twitter to promote your best tweets and increase your visibility to potential new followers.
  18. Target ads – Twitter ads can be targeted to reach people who are similar to the people you already follow, Twitter users’ interests or by geographical location.
  19. Use social media monitoring and management tools – Hootsuite, Sprout Social and Followerwonk are great ways to gain insight into your Twitter efforts. These will help you identify your most popular tweets, most engaged followers and track new followers.
  20. Use these metrics to IMPROVE YOUR TWEETS – based on your analytics, rework your Twitter efforts to tweet about the content that followers are most engaged with and to drop the things that fall short.
