How to Retain Social Media Followers

By: Sagefrog

Studies have shown that 72% of online adults are using social media sites and in the US, 8 in 10 of those adults prefer to connect with companies via social media sites rather than through corporate websites. Also, campaigns through social media have shown to be more effective in generating quality leads than older and more traditional methods.

While companies and small businesses are effectively building fan bases through the social media realm, many are finding it tricky to keep those fans. Seeing as social media users thrive on meaningful online relationships, here are some tips to engage your fans and hold their interest:

  • Follow up on your posts – by liking a comment or responding back, you can show your followers that you are interested in their wants and needs. It is crucial to create a dialogue and keep it flowing. Remember that at a live networking event, one who just talks about themselves and hands out their own business cards is not going to win the most clients.
  • Provide your audience with useful content – find out who your customers are or who you want your customers to be and market your content to them. While staying relative to your company or small business, post information that your followers will find useful.
  • Follow the 80/20 rule – 80% of the content that you post should not be about your products and services. Instead, align your posts to your customers’ interests. By posting content to add value 80% of the time, you earn the right to promote 20% of the time.
  • Be consistent – Post frequently and at optimal times of the day or week. Use tools like Google Analytics to determine which posts are gaining the most reach and take notice of the time of day, day of the week and the content you are posting. If you do not post for a few days, remember that you have to find a way to build momentum again.
  • Plan your posts – set aside some time and plan your month out. This will allow you to put in minimal effort in the day to day, which helps when business gets busy. However, don’t forget to follow up on your posts. It only takes 10 minutes a day to check in and respond.
